Registered General Nurse Responsibilities

The duties of a registered general nurse will vary from day to day but you can expect to take on responsibilities such as:

Train

Attend training and with other healthcare professionals meetings

Follow

Follow regulatory guidelines set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Assist

Assist surgeons in operations or post-operation procedures

Perform

Perform routine procedures such as blood pressure tests and temperature checks

Maintain

Maintain accurate patient records

Educate

Educate patients and families on conditions and explain care plans

Operate

Operate medical equipment including imaging machines, defibrillators and respiratory ventilators

Coordinate

Registered General Nursing Careers

Registered general nurses have a range of career options available to them. You could choose to continue working in a hospital or GP surgery providing primary care, or you could work in an outpatient setting at health clinics or even become a health care assistant.

Registered nurses are expected to choose a specialism during their education in one of the following: paediatric, adult, mental health or learning difficulties nursing. Once qualified, nurses can choose to specialise further and work in specific areas of care including:

Registered General Nurse Qualifications

To become a registered general nurse, you need an accredited nursing degree approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

You must also complete specialised training at university and undertake regular training and courses whilst working as a qualified RGN nurse.
